Back On Track: Fitness vs. Health
When you look at what it takes to get on the right track it needn't be painful or horrible. The best way to begin a successful new beginning is to start with realistic goals. These include action steps that can actually be pleasant and continued the rest of your life.
Fitness versus health
There should be a balance between the two. Fitness is the ability to perform physical activity. Health is a balance of all the systems of the body, the nervous, muscular, skeletal, circulatory, digestive, lymphatic, hormonal and all the other systems. There are many athletes who are very fit, but due to bad eating habits and other poor health choices, can actually have a low health status. Looking at goals for long term, of course it is nice to be fit, but being healthy is more important. Exercising too much and picking the wrong physical activity for you can impair your health just as badly as a sedentary lifestyle can.
Walking is one of the best ways to get started on an exercise program since it is a simple, low-stress workout that is not easily overdone. Most studies done about the benefits of exercise and especially cardiovascular health have been done utilizing walking as the main exercise.
Some of the benefits of walking include the following: increased life expectancy; prevention and management of coronary heart disease as well as hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis and depression; lower rate of colon cancer, stroke and low back injury.
Remember, inactivity is almost as great a contributor to coronary heart disease and hypertension as cigarette smoking.

"NUTRIENT OF THE MONTH"
MSM: Methylsulfonylmethane
Every so often we get new information on a nutrient, vitamin, herb or enzyme that allows us to use it in a different way with exciting results. Recently this happened after I was reading some clinical information as it related to MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) also referred to sometimes as organic sulfur. Many of you will recognize this nutrient since it is commonly used with glucoasamine and chondroitin sulfate to support joint health. What we found is that the amount needed to offer greater results needed to be in much higher dosages than exists in these above mentioned formulas. In addition, MSM has many other functions and therefore a broad range of conditions it can be potentially helpful with. These higher dosages have been used for many years by a number of practitioners without harmful side effects.

Postgraduate Studies
My postgraduate plan for 2005 will be the following. Every year the Council on Nutrition sponsors an exciting and informative nutritional conference. This will also allow me to maintain my diplomate status in the American Clinical Board of Nutrition. This is always a well-attended conference with the presentation of much of what is new and cutting edge in the nutritional field.
I will be continuing my studies in BioSET, which will keep me, updated on Dr. Ellen Cutler’s work in regards to natural support and care for allergies and sensitivities. Her work utilizing dietary management, homeopathic detoxification, enzyme therapy, and accupressure has allowed us and other BioSET practitioners to help thousands of people with chronic health conditions. It has served as a wonderful complement to traditional care and allowed many people to feel better while using less medication.
I will also be continuing with the Functional Medicine Updates, which are monthly CD’s created and sent by a wonderful educational group started by Dr. Jeffrey Bland.

SAD: Seasonal Affective Disorder
For those who suffer from SAD, we don’t have to define this unfortunate disorder. As summer and fall slip away, many people feel the effects of less daylight. The range of symptoms vary from minor to severe, but the hallmark is a mix of emotional changes that color the day with more darkness than already exists.
Why this occurs is not clear but most theories have to do with our internal clocks and the connection between brain chemicals called neurotransmitters and sunlight.
