Boys and Girls of Summer
June, 2006
For awhile it didn’t seem like summer weather was going to come this year. As the school year comes to an end for the year, the summer challenge of what to do with our kids is upon us. For many of our children physical activity is not a high priority during the year. If summer activities do not include sports and outside swimming and fun, this is a good time to remind everyone of the importance of exercise and physical activity. During the year for some children, too much free time is spent with TV, computer and video games spiced with instant messaging.
Our culture has developed a growing problem with childhood weight problems and a sedentary lifestyle that may “morph” into adult cholesterol, weight and diabetic problems. These are avoidable problems when proper diet and exercise become higher priorities. Take advantage of the summer weather and show your children how much fun there is outside. Play outside with them, take them swimming and hiking and organize with other parents, outings to water parks and outside activities that everyone can enjoy. Take advantage of the beauty of the Berkshire Hills that surrounds us.
The local newspapers are filled with outside activities throughout the week and weekends that range from guided hikes and walks to bike rides, bird watching, canoe and kayak trips and other wonderful activities. The younger you start with your children, the greater the likelihood they will develop a love for outdoor activities. It is never too late to start.
We as parents are their role models. If you take them on these activities and they see you doing so on a regular basis as well, they will naturally want to join in on the fun. These healthy activities are an important legacy we can leave our children. Say goodbye to XBOX and Play Station for now and enjoy our great outdoors! Have a wonderful and healthy summer.
